How Albany Will Look In The Next 5 Years
Albany, WA, boasts not only breathtaking scenery and rich cultural history but also a thriving economy that has undergone significant growth and development in recent years. John and I take great pride in the exciting new opportunities that have come to define our community.
Albany generates a staggering $3.2 billion to the Great Southern Region’s economic well-being, a testament to the hard work and dedication of its residents, businesses, and leaders.
Recently, the City of Albany unveiled its ambitious new Community Strategic Plan — Albany 2023, which lays out a comprehensive roadmap for our city’s continued growth and prosperity.
Here are the key plans you need to know:
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE 1: TO STRENGTHEN AND DIVERSIFY THE ECONOMIC BASE
It is the goal of the City of Albany to foster economic activity that strengthens and diversifies the regional economic base in order to provide residents with more access to opportunities.
Regional Strategic Initiatives
- Make sure the Regional Blueprint includes the construction of a 4- or 5-star hotel on the Albany waterfront and the sale and development of the Esplanade Hotel Sites as the top two infrastructure projects for the city.
- Create a business partnership with Denmark and Plantagenet Shires to work together and take advantage of subregional economic development opportunities.
- Build a plan to promote the Denmark, Plantagenet, and Albany area as tourist destinations.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE 2: EMPLOYMENT THAT SUPPORTS ECONOMIC GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
The goal for Albany’s central area is to make it the most desirable place to live and do business in regional Western Australia. The objectives include the following:
- To have a safe environment for kids, pedestrians, and cyclists
- To encourage a one-of-a-kind shopping experience
- To attract investment, including upgrades to existing and the construction of new commercial and residential mix infrastructure; implement an effective retail trading policy; work cooperatively with local retailers; and deliver a variety of programs and strategies to bring vibrancy and life to the City of Albany’s central area.
- Create an area around the Albany Regional Library that offers free Wi-Fi to the public.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE 3: TO DEVELOP AND PROMOTE ALBANY AS A UNIQUE AND SOUGHT-AFTER VISITOR DESTINATION
The City of Albany plays a significant role in the local tourism industry through its direct operation and management of the Albany Visitor Centre, the Albany Regional Airport, and various visitor attractions like the Princess Royal Fortress and the award-winning National Anzac Centre. It aims to:
- Collaborate with REX Airlines to boost flight availability and frequency, especially for value-priced vacation packages.
- Build and promote a world-class tourist attraction at the intersection of Mt Adelaide and Mt Clarence (Albany Heritage Park) to attract tourists from all over the world.
- To become a nationally and internationally recognized Cycle City and Trails destination capable of hosting events and attracting visitors.
